PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O God, hear our voices as we cry to you.Listen to our prayers.O Lord, if you keep score of all our failings, who could stand before you?If you mark down our sins against you and each other, who could stand before you?In the dark night we wait for your forgiveness. We hope for the morning of your mercy. With you, O God, there is steadfast love. With you there is great power of forgiveness. Our hope is in you.
MINISTER’S CORNER
It is a matter of perspective, I guess. On our last day of vacation Susan, the kids and I were on the beach.Susan was sitting in a chair reading and I was in the water with the kids.Near where we were playing was a sand bar that at low tide extended several 100 yards out from the shore.Problem was that as the tide comes in the depth of the water grows rapidly. There were several warning signs posted on the beach pointing to the danger. On that day a couple of people ignored the warnings, found themselves caught on the sand bar as the tide came in.They began to swim towards shore, but not being particularly strong swimmers neither made it far before they began to show signs of distress.Susan and another young couple on the beach were the first to notice their need.As it happened the young couple were EMT’s that have worked on beaches before, so without hesitation they sprung into action. One of them approached Jonathan and asked to use his boogie board.Without hesitation Jonathan handed it over and in no time flat the young couple had rescued both troubled swimmers. As they brought them to shore Jonathan went to retrieve his board and turning to me said, “Gee I can’t believe my boogie board saved that person’s life.”It is all a matter of perspective, I guess.
From my perspective I could see that the young couple used their training and experience to save those lives, but for Jonathan it was all about his boogie board. It got me thinking about all the things for which I take credit and responsibility. When a sermon hits the mark, a new program takes off or an old one pays off, I am inclined to say, like Jonathan, look what I did.But did I?Or is there something bigger at work, someone bigger? When someone visits the church for the first time, and then comes back a second time, look what I did.But did I?Or is there something bigger at work, someone bigger?I think what we all long to know is that there is something and someone bigger working in and around us to accomplish things far more wonderful than our minds can conceive.Scriptures tells us that there is.Our faith tells us that there is.Other’s around us tells us that there is.But it is all too easy to stand on the beach holding onto the boogie board saying, “look what I did”.It is a matter of perspective, I guess.May we grow in our perspective and see that someone greater than we is doing something big, far bigger that we can conceive of in our midst, because he is.Thanks be to God.
The SHARE Food Network distributes high quality, affordable nutritious food as a way to build community and strengthen families. Organized through 320 churches and community groups, participants perform two hours of volunteer service and pay $19.00 monthly to purchase groceries worth approximately $40.00 - $45.00. People are empowered through SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) to stretch their family's food budget, access information on health and nutrition, and develop partnerships to prevent hunger in communities. Established in 1990, the SHARE Food Network provides approximately 13,500 food packages each month. By combining buying power and volunteerism, SHARE is able to offer quality foods and substantial savings to its participants.
Starting in April Berryville Presbyterian will be joining into an established SHARE outreach in Clarke County. By providing staff and volunteer support we will seek to help struggling families and individuals stretch their food budgets. Anyone can order a food package (contents vary month to month). The only requirement is that a prepaid order is placed by the ordering deadline and that the recipient performs 2 hours of community service during the month. On distribution day (generally the third Saturday of each month) we will work with our partner church, Destiny Christian Center in Front Royal to sort and fill food orders and then bring them back to our Fellowship Hall to distribute to those who have ordered them.
The congregation can help by volunteering on Distribution Saturday to either help sort and pick up orders in Front Royal and/or helping to distribute the orders from our Fellowship Hall. You can also be active in spreading the word that we are involved in this ministry and encouraging others to participate by placing orders, you may even want to identify a family or individual in need and place an order on their behalf. You can start by ordering for yourself so that you can attest to the quality and value of the food provided through this program.
Our Witness committee will be coordinating the program and our volunteer needs. If you have questions or would like to volunteer on either a regular or occasional basis please speak with either John Tiedemann, Chair of our Witness Committee or Jonathan following the service.
June orders for Share Food Packages will be taken through Monday June 8th 12:00 PM.June’s distribution day will be Saturday June 20th.If you are interested in helping on the 20th please contact John Teidemann.
